Wishing Stairs on kolmas osa korealaisessa Yeogo goedam -kauhuelokuvien sarjassa. Sarja alkoi vuonna 1998 elokuvalla Wishing Corridors ja seuraavana vuonna ilmestyi Memento Mori. Wishing Strairs on kuitenkin juonellisesti täysin itsenäinen teos ja aiempien leffojen tunteminen ei ole välttämätöntä. Elokuva on hitaasti etenevä mystinen trilleri, jossa on mukana myös kauhunomaisia elementtejä.

Suuren osan kestostaan se keskittyy kuitenkin normaaliin balettikoulun oppilaiden elämään ja tyttöihin tutustumiseen. Erityistä huomiota saavat Jin Sungin (Ji-hyo Song) ja Soo Heen (Han-byeol Park) ja heidän keskinäinen ystävyyssuhteensa, jota mutkistaa heidän keskinäinen kilpailu baletin harvojen supertähtien joukkoon pääsemistä. Kolmas tarinan kannalta keskeinen ja varhain esitelty henkilö on mielenterveydellisistä ongelmista kärsivä Hye-ju (An Jo), jota kaikki tuntuvat karttavan.



Tarinan mukaan balettikoulun asuntolan ulkopuolella olevat portaa toteuttavat harvojen valittujen hartaimman toiveen. Portaikko osoittaa hyväksyntänsä paljastamalla salaisen 29. askelman, jolloin on mahdollista esittää portaikon ketulle toive. Toiveen toteutumisella on kuitenkin hintansa, jota hyväuskoiset nuorukaiset eivät osaa aavistaakaan. Tilanne muuttuu huomattavasti vakavammaksi koululla sattuneen kohtalokkaan onnettomuuden jälkeen. Surun ja murheen murtamana ei harkintakyky oikein toimi, ja portaikolta esitetään pyyntö, joka ei millään muotoa vaikuta erityisen järkevältä. Seuraamukset ovat sitten odotetun kaltaiset.

Wishing Stairs ei ole kaikkein pelottavimpia kauhuelokuvia, vaikka siinä onkin omat väristyksen aiheensa. Se pyrkii tuomaan kauhun normaaliin japanilaiseen oppilaitosympäristöön. Tästä syystä se keskittyy tyttökoulun arkeen ankaran kilpailutilanteen aikana, jolloin nuorten neitokaisten psyyke muuttuu suorastaan pirullisiksi. Elokuva on epäyhtenäinen, eikä kauhua herättämään tarkoitettuja kohtauksia olla onnistuttu sitomaan riittävän hyvin tarinakokonaisuuteen. Osittain ne näyttävät aivan kuin eri elokuvasta lähtöisin olevilta riistäytyessään tyylillisesti aivan eri maailmaan. Toisaalta vastaavan kaltaisia teoksia on nähty aiemmin paremmin toteutettuina. Esimerkkinä mainittakoon Whispering Corridors -trilogian aiemmat osat. Näiden lisäksi Wishing Stairs on runsaasti velkaa erityisesti visuaalisessa mielessä Ringu- ja Ju-On -elokuvasarjoille.

Wishing Stairsissa on kuitenkin oma viehättävä tunnelmansa, joka kaikesta huolimatta onnistuu säilymään läpi elokuvan. Toki nopeatempoisempiin elokuviin tottuneille teos saattaa tuntua hyvin pitkäveteiselle, mutta kärsivällisempi katsoja saa nautittavan katsomiskokonaisuuden elokuvan puutteista huolimatta. Tulkinnan varainen tarina jättää runsaasti katsojan päättelyn varaan, eikä kaikkea selitetä puhki. Todellisuuden ja unelmien/painajaisten raja on häilyvä veteen piirretty viiva, ja pyritäänpä sitä ajoittain piirtelemään jopa vereenkin, väkivaltainen gore-mättö loistaakin poissaoloaan lähes tyysin.

Omamielipide: No eipä ole paljoa sanottavaa oli aikas outo ja sainhan mä pari kertaa sätkyn mutta vähän vaikea kertoa ku tuli katottua kolmelta yöllä! Mutta joo oli aika erikoinen ja jäi paljon vaivaamaan mutta ihan hyvähän se oli. Mutta se kyllä välillä hyppi asiasta toiseen mut kyl sen sit jonku aijan päästä tajus. XD
