Johan Ludvig Runeberg (5. helmikuuta 1804, Pietarsaari – 6. toukokuuta 1877, Porvoo) oli suomenruotsalainen runoilija, kirjailija ja toimittaja. Hänen tuotantonsa on hyvin isänmaallista, joskaan hän ei kirjoittanut teoksiaan suomeksi vaan omalla äidinkielellään, ruotsilla. Runeberg vaikutti tuotantonsa kautta myös Ruotsin kirjallisuuteen. Runeberg on Suomen kansallisrunoilija.

Leivos on saanut nimensä Suomen kansallisrunoilijan Johan Ludvig Runebergin mukaan, jonka kerrotaan mielellään nauttineen leivoksia aamiaisella punssin kera. Usein kuullun käsityksen mukaan runebergintortun kehitti J. L. Runebergin vaimo Fredrika Runeberg, jonka tiedetään tehneen miehelleen vehnäjauhoista, korppujauhoista, keksimuruista ja manteleista omenahillolla ja sokerikuorrutuksella koristeltuja leivoksia. Fredrika Runebergin 1850-luvulta peräisin olevassa reseptikirjassa on kyseisen leivoksen ohje, joka kuitenkin lienee muunnelma alun perin porvoolaisen kondiittorimestarin Lars Asteniuksen 1840-luvulla luomasta tortusta.
