Suuret kivet elämässä

Kerran iäkästä professoria pyydettiin pitämään luento tehokkaasta ajan käytöstä ryhmälle suurten yritysten johtajia. Tämä luento oli vain yksi osa päivän tiiviistä ohjelmasta, ja professorilla oli vain tunti aikaa käytettävänään.

Seisoen tuon eliittiryhmän edessä, tarkastellen jokaista osanottajaa, professori sanoi: "Teemme pienen testin". Hän otti pöydän alta suuren lasipurkin ja asetti sen eteensä pöydälle. Sitten hän otti esiin tennispallon kokoisia kiviä, jotka laittoi purkkiin yksitellen. Kun purkki oli täynnä eikä sinne olisi enää voinut lisätä yhtään kiveä, professori katsoi oppilaitaan ja kysyi: "Onko purkki nyt täynnä?" Ryhmä vastasi melkein yhteen ääneen: "Kyllä!"

Odotettuaan muutaman sekunnin, professori kysyi: "Oletteko aivan varmoja?"
