Jalkapallon pelaaminen on todellista tehohoitoa

Ikääntyminen tuo tunnetusti mukanaan useita terveydellisiä vaikutuksia, joista yleisimpiin lukeutuvat kaatumisten aiheuttamat vammat. Näiden ennalta ehkäisy on kuitenkin yllättävän helppoa ja mikä parasta, myös mukavaa. Todellista tehohoitoa sekä fyysiselle että henkiselle terveydelle on jalkapallopelin säännöllinen harrastaminen. Jalkapalloilu lisää luuston massaa ja tiheyttä sekä parantaa lihaksiston kuntoa ja kykyä vastata äkillisiin ja täysin voimin tehtäviin ponnistuksiin.

Lihaksiston ja luuston parantunut kunto vaikuttavat yhdessä ihmisen tasapainon ylläpitoon ja liikkeiden koordinaatioon, osoittaa Kööpenhaminan yliopiston professori Peter Krustrupin johdolla julkaistu monen tutkimuksen sarja. Urheilusuoritusten vaikutuksia tutkittiin henkilöillä, joista valtaosa ei ollut pelannut jalkapalloa aikaisemmin.

14 viikon harjoitusjaksossa pohjelihasten jäntevyys parani merkittävästi, mikä puolestaan paransi kokeeseen osallistujien tasapainoa.

Kun palloilua jatkettiin 16 kuukautta, osallistujien fyysinen terveys parani edelleen. Yhtäjaksoisen pitemmän harjoittelun seurauksena koko kehon luuston tiheys lisääntyi, mikä vähentää murtumisriskiä.

Pallopelien harrastamisen paremmuus kävelyyn ja juoksuun verrattuna syntyy nopeista, äkillistä ja erittäin kovaa lihasten jännitystä vaativista tilanteista kuten äkkipysähdyksistä ja lyhyistä spurteista. Juoksussa lihasrasitus on tasaista, käytännöllisesti katsoen koko ajan vakiona toistuvaa liikettä.

Säännöllisen jalkapalloilun teho on hämmästyttävä. Krustrupin ryhmä vertasi 70-vuotiaiden koko ikänsä harrastuksenaan pelanneiden ja 30-vuotiaiden pelaamattomien miesten fyysisiä ominaisuuksia. Jalkapalloilevien ikämiesten lihaskunto ja luuston tiheys ja siten vähäinen riski murtumiin olivat yhtä hyvät kuin passiivisilla nuorilla miehillä.

Jalkapalloilu kehittää myös sosiaalisia suhteita. Aikaisemmin vain hyvin harvoin jalkapalloilua tai kävelyä harrastaneiden ihmissuhteet kehittyivät, ja ryhmien sisällä kasvoi yhteenkuuluvuus ja ”me-henki”.

Kuten varsinaisissa terveydellisissä ominaisuuksissa, tässäkin jalkapalloilua harrastaneiden kehitys oli suurempaa kuin kävelijöiden ja juoksijoiden ryhmässä, Krustrup ja kumppanit osoittivat.

The same thrill, the same awe and mystery, come again and again when we look at any problem deeply enough. With more knowledge comes deeper, more wonderful mystery, luring one on to penetrate deeper still. Never concerned that the answer may prove disappointing, but with pleasure and confidence we turn over each new stone to find unimagined strangeness leading on to more wonderful questions and mysteries -- certainly a grand adventure!


It is true that few unscientific people have this particular type of religious experience. Our poets do not write about it; our artists do not try to portray this remarkable thing. I don't know why. Is nobody inspired by our present picture of the universe? The value of science remains unsung by singers, so you are reduced to hearing -- not a song or a poem, but an evening lecture about it. This is not yet a scientific age.


Perhaps one of the reasons is that you have to know how to read the music. For instance, the scientific article says, perhaps, something like this: "The radioactive phosphorus content of the cerebrum of the rat decreases to one-half in a period of two weeks." Now, what does that means?


It means that phosphorus that is in the brain of a rat (and also in mine, and yours) is not the same phosphorus as it was two weeks ago, but that all of the atoms that are in the brain are being replaced, and the ones that were there before have gone away.




So what is this mind, what are these atoms with consciousness? Last week's potatoes! That is what now can remember what was going on in my mind a year ago -- a mind which has long ago been replaced.


That is what it means when one discovers how long it takes for the atoms of the brain to be replaced by other atoms, to note that the thing which I call my individuality is only a pattern or dance. The atoms come into my brain, dance a dance, then go out; always new atoms but always doing the same dance, remembering what the dance was yesterday.

You look in a mirror, and let's say you part your hair on the right side. You look in the mirror, and your image has its hair parted on the left side, so the image is left-to-right mixed up.

But it's not top-to-bottom mixed up, because the top of the head of the image is there at the top, and the feet are down at the bottom.

The question is: how does the mirror know to get the left and right mixed up, but not the up and down?

You'll get the better idea of problem if you think of lying down and looking at the mirror, all right, your hair is still on the left side
and now the left and right that was up and down where as the up and down which looked ok was right and left before and mirror somehow figured out what you are going to do when you look at it.

So try to describe in a sort of symmetrical way what a mirror does that it does not look lobsided, it takes left and mixes it with right and does not do same with up and down.

Up to 1956 it was believed that the laws of physics obeyed each of three separate symmetries called
C, P, and T.
  • (Charge) The symmetry C means that the laws are the same for particles and antiparticles.
  • (Parity) The symmetry P means that the laws are the same for any situation and its mirror image (the mirror image of a particle spinning in a right-handed direction is one spinning in a left-handed direction).
  • (Time) The symmetry T means that if you reverse the direction of motion of all particles and antiparticles, the system should go back to what it was at earlier times; in other words, the laws are the same in the forward and backward directions of time.

In 1956 two American physicists, Tsung-Dao Lee and Chen Ning Yang, found out that the weak force does not obey the symmetry P.
In other words, the weak force would make the universe develop in a different way from the way in which the mirror image of the universe would develop.

They also found that the weak force did not obey the symmetry C.
In other words, it would cause a universe composed of antiparticles to behave differently from our universe.

Nevertheless, it seemed that the weak force did obey the combined symmetry CP.
That is, the universe would develop in the same way as its mirror image if, in addition, every particle was swapped with its antiparticle!

However, in 1964 two more Americans, J. W. Cronin and Val Fitch, discovered that even the CP symmetry was not obeyed in the decay of certain particles called K-mesons.

There is a mathematical theorem that says that any theory that obeys quantum mechanics and relativity must always obey the combined symmetry CPT. In other words, the universe would have to behave the same if one replaced particles by antiparticles, took the mirror image, and also reversed the direction of time.

But Cronin and Fitch showed that if one replaces particles by antiparticles and takes the mirror image, but does not reverse the direction of time, then the universe does not behave the same. The laws of physics, therefore, must change if one reverses the direction of time – they do not obey the symmetry T.

Certainly the early universe does not obey the symmetry T: as time runs forward the universe expands – if it ran backward, the universe would be contracting.

And since there are forces that do not obey the symmetry T, it follows that as the universe expands, these forces could cause more antielectrons to turn into quarks than electrons into antiquarks.

Then, as the universe expanded and cooled, the antiquarks would annihilate with the quarks, but since there would be more quarks than antiquarks, a small excess of quarks would remain.

It is these that make up the matter we see today and out of which we ourselves are made.

Quantum teleportation achieved over 16 km

Scientists in China have succeeded in teleporting information between photons further than ever before. They transported quantum information over a free space distance of 16 km (10 miles), much further than the few hundred meters previously achieved, which brings us closer to transmitting information over long distances without the need for a traditional signal.
